What is Giclee ?
A "giclee" print is a piece of printed artwork or photograph produced by using a high quality digital printer. The technology behind this superior printing method is based on the power of computers, combined with advances in printing techniques.
Extremely fine droplets of special ink are printed onto heavy water-colour paper or artists canvas. These droplets can be controlled by the computer so that the resolution of the printed image is much finer than conventional printing.
The New Standard of Art Prints
Giclee prints are big news in the fine art business having taken over from lithographs and screen prints as the dominant and preferred way for artists, galleries and publishers to make reproductions and prints.
Why are Giclee Art Prints Better?
The machine used to make Phil McKay art prints is a Giclee Printmaker,
manufactured in the US. It is an eight colour machine that produces images
at an optical resolution of 1800 dots per inch. The pictures you see on
this website are displayed at 72 dots per inch ! In simple terms, when
you look closely at the image you can't see any dot structure.
How We Make Our High Quality Prints
Phil's Limited Editions Art Prints are produced on a sheet of 400 gsm
Arches 100% archival rag watercolour paper. It is wrapped around a drum
which revolves at high speed and, as the drum rotates, the print head
moves slowly across the drum spitting ink onto the sheet.
Printing a sheet with this process on the highest resolution takes one
hour compared to offset which can produce up to 15,000 sheets per hour.
